Persuasive Essay on Homosexuality

 Persuasive Essay on Homosexuality

One of the issues surrounding homosexuality is the desire for equal treatment and protection of homosexuals.  They say that homosexuals are also humans who deserve to be treated with respect and given protection by the society just like anybody else.  Though equality is much desired and that discrimination has no place in the contemporary society, it must however be emphasized that the opponents of homosexuality have valid moral, scientific, and psychological basis for their conviction against homosexuality.  These moral, scientific and psychological bases against homosexuality will be explained in this essay in the multicultural context, critical, civic, scientific and value literacies.
In the multicultural context, universal consensus on the status and acceptability of homosexuals and homosexual acts has still not been attained.  People all over the world still struggle to accept homosexuality.  There are valid reasons for this.  One reason for this is that homosexuality is not natural (Jason Dulle, n.d.).  Nature designed man to be with a woman.  The same is true for a woman which was designed by nature to be with a man.  In addition, nature also has designed the body to have “in holes” and “out holes.” These holes have been purposely designed by nature either to take things from outside to inside while some holes are purposely designed to excrete things from inside the body to outside.  These holes should not be confused with one another otherwise we will be going against the very purpose of their design by nature.
Within the context of critical literacy, homosexuality, since it is contrary to human nature, is associated with various mental health problems.  Research has shown that there are substantial mental and psychological differences between gays and straight individuals.  According to N.E. Whitehead (2008), depression is common among homosexuals and that suicide attempts among homosexuals are six times greater compared to straight individuals (p.2).   They are also at higher risk of emotional problems, anxiety disorder, conduct disorder and nicotine dependence.  Homosexuality, therefore, is also an issue of mental and emotional health.
In the context of civic literacy, it is important to emphasize that the clamor against homosexuality is based on the fact that homosexuality does not serve the purpose of perpetuation of human race.  Our biological features are geared towards procreation.  Homosexual relationship will do disservice to nature and to humanity since it is not geared towards procreation since they are incapable of creating offspring.  Taking this into account, the only solution is to discourage homosexuality and homosexual acts.
The issue of homosexuality can also be addressed by biologists and psychologists.  Biologist can prove that homosexuality is an anomaly and a defect that should be corrected.  Psychologists can also prove that tolerating homosexuality in our society will only lead to increased number of individuals who have mental and psychological disorder and increased suicide rates.
In the context of value literacies, homosexuality should not be tolerated because it can be considered as a sin.  It must be emphasized that the history of creation itself states that God only created Adam and Eve.  It was God’s intention for man to live together with a woman for the purpose of entering into mutual love, respect and support and for the purpose of creating offspring.  The New Testament itself speaks against homosexuals and homosexual acts, to wit:

"Because of this [the suppression of truth resulting in idolatry], God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion" (Romans 1:26-27).

The different literacies play important roles in attaining comprehensive understanding of the issue of homosexuality.  They can help clarify issues in support of homosexuality but they can also be used to expound on the issues against homosexuality. It is important, therefore, that before any value judgments are made in favor or against homosexuality the multicultural, critical, civic, scientific and value literacies must be analyzed and evaluated.
