Critical Analysis Essay on If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Critical Analysis Essay on If I Stay by Gayle Forman

If I Stay is the story of Mia, a seventeen-year-old cellist with a life filled with joy and choices. She possesses a promising future, but, in a terrible tragedy that leaves her best friend and loving boyfriend in panic, she loses the life she has always loved. With her body stuck in a coma and her spirit caught between life and death, Mia is left to contemplate on the most crucial decision she will ever make.

As Mia narrates current situation and events, she also talks about past events relevant to the confusing present. She talks about the magic of music; about its power to create a deep and meaningful relationship between people. The narration of her life exposes each character’s willingness to sacrifice their preferences and liking to reach out and connect with the people they genuinely value. The circumstances that Mia faces illustrate the power of tragedy to unite disparate people together.  Ultimately, Mia’s life story proves the importance of family in one’s life, that without them, a hollow in one’s heart will never be filled again.

Forman has created characters that are easy to relate to. She describes people that are real, people that we can meet even at the side of our street. She paints a beautiful picture of everything a girl wants to have: understanding and supportive parents, a jolly and invigorating brother, an unconditionally loving boyfriend, and talent that can leave a crowd in awe.  Nevertheless, her novel depicts that, in reality, not one person in this world can have everything.

The book emphasizes on the fact that endless possibilities can happen within a span of 24 hours. It explains the importance of time: the significance of seconds and minutes in one’s life. The novel allows its readers to realize that every tick of a clock can mean one’s death; that life is too short, that the unknowable future brings the uncertainty we all dread. In the end, Foreman elaborates upon the fact that one’s love upon another can either give life- or take it.

If I Stay touches on the importance of family and love, but also shows the effect of loss, grief and acceptance on the life of a girl who seemed to have it all.
