Essay on Firearms and Crimes
Write a 1250-1500 word essay that thoroughly explores the following questions:
a) Do you believe that removing firearms from otherwise lawful citizens reduces the opportunity for crime? If so, how?
b) Do you believe that gun laws will remove access to firearms by criminals? Why or why not?
I do
not believe that removing firearms from otherwise lawful citizens reduces the
opportunity for crime. This is because firearms are not the only weapons that
can be used in order to create crimes. Firearms are just one of the many
weapons that can be used by criminals to undertake their evil acts (Gold 41).
If people want to commit crimes, they will be desperate to use anything to make
sure that they will be successful even if they don’t have access to firearms.
Thus, once criminals are prevented from accessing firearms, they will just seek
for other options to equip themselves with the necessary weapons so that they
can have successful results in whatever crimes they are planning to execute.
The
bottom line is that there can be many crimes that can be done by criminals even
without having access to firearms. I think that the opportunity for crime
originates from the willingness of people to commit it. If people are so
motivated to commit crimes, they will be successful even without having access
to firearms. Firearms are just being used as accessories to crimes, but they
are not the main source of motivation to commit crimes. For example, crimes
being committed over the Internet do not require firearms to be executed
effectively. Nonetheless, even if there are no firearms involved, cyber crimes
are able to create extensive damage especially to the victims. This is the
unfortunate thing about crimes. However, it cannot be denied that having
firearms gives criminals with more confidence to execute their evil acts
because they know that they can use these weapons to intimidate their enemies
and become more fearsome. However, there is very little chance that
opportunities for crime will be ever be reduced just by merely preventing those
criminals from having access to firearms.
The proponents of gun control law fear that it will only create lawlessness in our society. In their desire to appeal to the public's emotion and get public support they have created an image of a gun ownership is inherently immoral which can be considered as tantamount to bigotry (Kates 2). In 1967, Sidney Harris once said that “"The mere possession of a gun is, in itself, an urge to kill, not only by design, but by accident, by madness, by fright, by bravado." (Kates 1). The mass media also portrays the gun owners as psychopaths who thirst for blood. This is, however, totally devoid of empirical basis.

Gun
laws can only be effective in removing access to firearms by criminals if they
are going to be implemented strictly. If the government is really serious in
implementing the gun laws, then there should be no reason why the criminals
could still have access to firearms. The government needs to coordinate with
the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the gun laws can be implemented
effectively. If all things work perfectly, the government and the law
enforcement agencies can work together and ensure that criminals can never have
access to firearms once again.
However,
the reality is that most of the time governments are not very serious in
implementing these laws. This is why criminals are able to circumvent the laws
and find ways to still have access to firearms. There are even instances where
the government officials and law enforcement officers are the ones who provide
protection to the criminals because they were not able to resist the bribes
(Lott 65). The truth is that criminals who have the money are able to escape
the limitations being imposed by laws as they can just bribe their way towards
getting the support of some government officials and officers. Because of this,
criminals just disregard the gun laws and still access any firearms or weapons
that they want to have. Thus, the effectiveness of gun laws will all boil down
to how serious or committed the government and law enforcement agencies will be
when it comes to the implementation of the gun laws. If they are very serious
in doing this, the criminals will have fear in violating the gun laws because
they know that the law enforcement agencies will not hesitate to apprehend them
once they get caught violating these laws. Otherwise, such gun laws will just
remain printed in paper without any effectiveness at all.
