Essay on Food Inc. Documentary

I learned the following information after watching the Food Inc. documentary film: 1) Farm owners treat the livestock and poultry in their farms in a horrifying and sickening manner; 2) Farm workers are also being abused by the farm owners and made to work in farms where the minimum standards of safety are not being met; 3) The food products being sold in the market such as the chicken, pork and tomato and others are being fed artificial food so that they grow faster and become bigger, and fatter in lesser period of time;  4) Processed food are basically and ultimately come from the same product which is corn; 5) There is a new strain of E. coli which causes illness to 73,000 Americans and death to thousands more; 6)More Americans now have diabetes and heart ailments early in their life; and 7) During the Bush administration, the head of the FDA was the former executive vice president of the National Food Processors Association and the chief of staff of the Department of Agriculture was the former chief lobbyist for the beef industry.

After watching the documentary, I have become more aware about the food I buy and eat, the environment, poultry and livestock.  I have realized that the food I eat on a daily basis may affect my health in the future.  I have also realized that the food I eat may have bacteria which can kill me.  I also realized that not every product that is advertised on television and in newspapers is healthy for me.

I found out that the reason why some products are continuously being sold in the market despite its harmful effects is that the people who sell these products to consumers like me are very powerful.  They are so powerful that they have managed to find their way inside the White House.  I know now that these products have not yet been banned because they are being supported by the government.  I know now why so many people in my community are obese or have diabetes.  I have studied their eating pattern and came to the conclusion that the food they eat is contributing to their present state of health.

I also came to realization that I have a choice. Consumers have a choice.  They can choose not to eat processed food.  They can choose not to eat food that came from the farms shown in the documentary.  They can choose not to eat fast food.  They can choose to eat healthy.  They can choose to live a healthy life style.

For instance, I have become more conscious of the milk that I buy in the grocery after finding out that the milk that I have been drinking may have come from cattle which has been injected with artificial growth hormones which may eventually affect my health.  I also have become more aware that the burgers I eat do not only destroy the environment but may also be dirty and contaminated and may have harmful by products which can make me sick.  I have also learned that the environment suffers when I consume more meat products since they need to be loaded on trucks and transported from the farm to the city.  At present, I plan to try reducing my intake of meat and instead eat more organic products such as salad.  I also try to reduce my intake of carbonated and sweetened drinks and instead drink more water which is a healthier alternative.

Conclusion
People think that choosing to eat in fast food is cheap.  I now know that too much burgers and fries and other processed food can kill me.  This is no longer an issue of cost as eventually people who suffer from sickness or disease may end up spending more.  Moreover, there is no price tag to living a healthy life.
