Crimes are problems of the entire community. Since everybody has a stake in it controlling crime is an issue that should be left to the government but to the entire community. However, how far can we go in helping the government control crime? Are we capable of sacrificing some of our privileges in exchange for a crime-free society?
One of the solutions being proposed to control crime is to control the use of guns. The idea behind is that if we control the purchase of guns and the ownership of guns we also control crime rate. Since the majority of crimes take place with the use of guns the lesser guns we have in the streets then the lesser chance of violent incidents committed with the use of guns.
Currently, there are two significant statutes which control the use of guns and firearms. This is the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968. The National Firearms Act of 1934 imposed strict registration requirements and a transfer tax on machine guns and short-barreled long guns. The Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibited the mail-order sales and the interstate sales of firearms.

For the gun control advocates and supporters, restricting access to guns is the only solution so that criminals, juveniles and other high risk individuals. The policy is that the federal government should take initiative to decrease the availability of guns.
While everybody is against crime there are individuals who pose strong objections against laws seeking to control the availability and access to guns. They argue that allowing access to guns for responsible individuals is the best deterrent to the threat of crime and other violent acts. They are also against the notion that the federal government will extend its scope and powers and restrict their right to possess guns in violation of the Second Amendment.
It is true that in the hands of a responsible individual possession of firearm and guns can help save lives. While the newspapers do not report it there are events where gangs have been repelled from attacking innocent civilians because these individuals made a stand and showed them his gun. In the hands of these individuals a number of lives can be saved. However, in the hands of a high risk and irresponsible individual a gun can be a very dangerous weapon. He can kill innocent lives. Recently a Norwegian man killed more than 80 individuals in a shooting spree.
Individuals who want a crimeless society need to make sacrifices. We need to give up some of our rights so we can enjoy peace and prosperity. We need to sacrifice some of our cherished rights and liberties so the federal and state government can be able to better protect us.
