Essay on Advantages of Capital Punishment

Essay on Advantages of Capital Punishment

One of the advantages of capital punishment is that it helps to limit crimes in society in two ways. First, the presence of death penalty as the highest form of punishment helps to limit crimes in society because people will be afraid to commit crimes especially those that are punishable by death penalty (Pojman 75). This is unlike other countries where the highest form of punishment even to the most serious crimes is only lifetime imprisonment. Because people know that they will not get punished by death even if they get caught doing crimes, they remain motivated to do crimes. Once they get imprisoned for life, they will just figure out a way to escape through the help of their connections to influential people. Thus, the crime rates are just not getting reduced without the criminals being afraid of the punishment that they will have to face after getting caught. Capital punishment creates fear into the minds of people not to do any crimes or illegal activities.

Aside from this, capital punishment is able to limit crimes in society because the ruthless criminals do not get the opportunity to have a second chance in life anymore. They are killed upon the authority of the government and thus they will not have the chance to return to society to possibly victimize more innocent people. There had been many cases already of convicted criminals who underwent rehabilitation and managed to return to society only to commit crimes once again. With death penalty being implemented legally, the mistake that the convicted criminals made will surely be their last. Their evilness will finally be ended upon their death and justice will finally be achieved by the families and relatives of the victims of crimes who are left behind dealing with the tremendous pain of the loss of their loved ones.

Another advantage of capital punishment is that it helps to create a positive image on the part of the government and of the justice system. On the part of the government, the implementation of capital punishment sends a message to the people that it is determined to make the society safer by reducing crime rates and ending the lives of criminals who do not deserve to live anymore (Cole 274). The people will gain respect and appreciate the sincerity and commitment of the government to create a safer environment that is crime free. The people will realize that the government is very serious in its advocacy towards ensuring that justice will be served to the victims of crimes even to the extent of having to kill the criminals involved through death penalty.

On the part of the justice system, the implementation of capital punishment sends a message to the people that it is working well and giving fair judgments. This means that the people who committed serious crimes are those who are ordered to die through capital punishment, while those who are innocent and wrongfully accused are acquitted and set free. The courts are aware of the possibility that wrongful executions could happen if they make the wrong decisions, so they make sure that they carefully analyze the cases that they are handling and make the best decisions (Siegel 330). This is of course very favourable on the part of the families of the victims who did not deserve to die. Knowing that the criminals who killed their loved ones will also die through death penalty can somehow be their consolation that can help them accept the loss of their loved ones easier in the long run. They can finally move on from this dark chapter in their lives and be at peace knowing that justice has been served.
