According to news report entitled “Why Couples Cheat Financially”, recent study conducted by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling says that 1 in 4 couples do not tell their spouse about their financial difficulties.
This is not unusual. In fact, I have heard of individuals who hide from their spouse their problems of impending bankruptcy, inability to pay their credit car bills, and lack of financial resources to pay their amortizations. It can happen that one spouse is a spender who uses the credit card a lot while the other is a saver who does not want to spend.
Dr. Gail Saltz explains money represents much more for couples. Money represents power in a relationship. For the couples, it means having control of the relationship and having the power to make decision for the money.
As a result, it does not come as a surprise that one spouse will hide his or her financial problems to the other. In most cases, one spouse learns only about the problem of the other spouse until it has become too late for them to handle the problem together. Consequently, this results to the downfall of the relationship
Below are the suggestions offered to address the financial issues between spouses:
1. Discussions about the family finances should become part of the day-to-day conversation of the spouses.
2. Talk about the budget beforehand. How much should be saved and how much should be spent should be clear to both spouses.
3. Do not discuss your budget inside the bedroom.
