Extrajudical Killing of Terrorists like Anwar al- Awlaki Questioned for Violating his Constitutional Rights

Recently, it was reported that Anwar al-Awlaki, a top leader and a propagandist of the al- Qaeda, was killed after an unmanned drone fired a Hellfire missile killing him and several fellow terrorists.  Government reports say that he called on other individuals in the United States and in other parts of the world to kill innocent men, women and children to advance his own agenda.

The killing of Anwar al Awlaki and the other senior al-Qaeda associates was considered as a major blow to the said terrorist organization.  It is also considered as a milestone in the government’s effort to defeat terrorism.

Though Anwar al-Awlaki was definitely a member of Al-Qaeda and his death may be considered as a step towards the defeat of Al Qaeda, civil liberties group questioned the manner the operation was conducted.  According to Texas representative Ron Paul, “No one likes these kind of people, but but I also like the rule of law and I like our Constitution, that you don't just target people, assassinate them, someone who has not been charged and you have no proof of anything.  So if we want to protect American citizens from that type of justice, we have to be more cautious."

Do you think the killing of a know Al Qaeda operative is legal? We believe that the action is uncalled for and violates the principles upon which the constitution was founded.  The United States is still a rule of law.  If Anwar al-Awlaki has committed criminal acts then he should be charged in the court of law and given the chance to defend himself.  Even if they are terrorists they are still entitled to due process.
