The Repeal of“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Policy in the Military

DADT or “Don’t ask, don’t tell” was the US policy on homosexuals in the military. This policy was effective from December 21, 1993 until September 20.2011. This policy banned military persons from harassing gay, lesbian and bisexual service members and openly prohibiting their entry into the military service. The act prevented any homo/bisexual person from disclosing or speaking about sexual preferences. The person who disregards the rule would be separated from the military.

Congress passed a bill to repeal DADT policy was approved in December 2010. It specified that only the President Barrack Obama, the Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen can certify that repealing it cannot harm the military. Awaiting period of 60 days must follow it before it can come into effect. On 6July 2011, a federal appeals court banned enforcement of this policy. The President, the Defense Secretary and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman sent the certification to the Lower House on July 22, 2011. The DADT policy was finally repealed on 22September, 2011.

The US military has made a significant milestone by lifting the ban on gays to serve in the Military. The ban has been implemented since 18 years ago. President Obama had commented that the ban forced the gay/lesbian military personnel to “lie about who they are”. Some Congress representatives contest the repeal, but the top leaders of the Pentagon have stated that it will facilitate the military’s capability to recruit its members and fight wars.

Obama said he is positive that repealing the ban will develop US nationwide security. The Army distributed a statement that reads, “The law is repealed”. Under the same breath, it reminded the soldiers their job to treat every one fairly. The Air Force Commander informed reporters that the lift was not a big deal.

Defense Secretary and Joint Chief of Staff Chairman programmed a news conference to answer questions about the lifting. Gay communities across the country began to celebrate. At a bar in San Diego, former and current troops regaled and did a midnight countdown. They celebrated the fact that they can disclose their real identity.

The Pentagon personnel head released a memo to the staff at 12:01 stating that the members must respect and dignify each other regardless of their sexual orientation. He added further that the Defense Department is bent on creating an open environment that has no barriers on institution, social and personal differences.  In Iraq, A US forces spokesman released a statement informing that their troops ere prepared for the repeal.

The press secretary of Pentagon said that the military has been prepared adequately for the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy.
