Argumentative Essay in Favor of Spanking Children
Research says that Sweden was the first country to ban spanking in 1979. In view of the various movements against spanking of children, there is now a global move against spanking children. The European Committee is in fact encouraging the member countries to ban corporal punishment. In 2007, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Uruguay, Venezuela, Spain and Chile approved laws which prohibit parents from spanking their children. In the United States, California and Massachusetts have laws that ban spanking. The laws that ban spanking has become a trend and it is believed that in a matter of years more countries will ban spanking. However, is spanking harmful for children? Will the ban on spanking lead to less violent and aggressive behavior? Will it be beneficial for the children? This essay seeks to establish that spanking is not necessarily harmful for children but can, in fact, be beneficial to children.
One of the bases for the anti-spanking of children is that spanking is believed to contribute to violent and aggressive behavior of children. Studies say that when children are repeatedly spanked then become accustomed to it and they are led into thinking that it is a perfectly acceptable behavior. As a result, when they become adults they exhibit violent and aggressive behavior. Some studies even go the extent in saying that spanking is associated with mental health problems. Thus spanking is being prohibited in the hope that aggressive and violent behavior will be avoided.
However, the result of these laws is exactly the opposite of what the laws seek to achieve. In fact, with the ban on spanking there has been increased rate of child abuse, aggressive parenting and even youth violence. It is there argued that children who were not spanked are more likely to exhibit violent and aggressive behavior when they grow up.
Children need to know that misbehavior has negative consequences. They need to learn early on that there is punishment every time they engage in socially unacceptable behavior. They need to know that when they grow up there are consequences for violating the law. Many children learn things differently. There are some children where spanking is effective in enforcing the right behavior. In these children, the right amount of spanking can be more beneficial for them.
In Sweden, the ban on spanking did not prove to be beneficial to children in the sense that parents do not know of any constructive alternative to spanking. As a result, these parents yelled, shouted and screamed at their children in order to correct their behavior. These actions however are not constructive alternatives to corporal punishment and only led to more child abuse.
There is also no evidence that supports the view that ending spanking will help in reducing the prevalence of mental health problems. In fact, spanking children can be beneficial to the development of the child so long as it is done properly and explained to children. What is important is communication between the parent and the child. Spanking should not be considered as the end but only a means to show the child that what he did was wrong. It is very important still for the parents and the children to communicate.
