Essay on Disadvantages of
Home Schooling
Homeschooling is now becoming
increasingly popular among parents across the United States. However as a
learning method, home-based education has a number of serious disadvantages and
negative effects that every parent must consider. Some of the downsides of
homeschooling include cost, time and effort, as well as socialization among
many others.
In comparison to public schooling
where education is relatively free, home-based education can be quite
expensive. This is because parents will be required to absorb all the required
and necessary materials that the child needs for his or her education. This
includes the curriculum, school supplies, as well as the materials and
equipment that the parent or tutor needs for teaching. Similarly, a parent who
wants the child to be under his or her supervision while learning must undergo
training, testing, and certification which will all cost money. Alternatively,
the parent can hire a private tutor which can cost from $50 to $80 on an hourly
basis (Tabor, 2012, p.1).
Proper facilities is an equally
essential aspect that the parent must consider in homeschooling. Unlike in
public education where almost every educational facility, equipment, and
amenity is provided, the parent of a home-based education child must either
purchase or make do with what they have at home. There are however, some
materials that the school can provide that are often not available at home.
This includes laboratory equipment, a large selection of library books and
other materials, gym equipment, and musical instruments to name a few (Middle
School, 2013, p.1).
The parent’s time and effort is
another important issue that needs to be considered with home-based education.
Much like the system in public education where teachers are responsible for
creating lesson plans, a parent who wants homeschooling for his or her child
must also prepare to make lesson plans on a daily basis. At the same time, the parent must organize
the schedule of their child’s schooling in order for him to her to develop a
proper learning routine. Also, home-based education would also mean that the
parent must organize activities such as field trips. This therefore means that
homeschooling will require a lot of time and effort on the parent’s part
(Homeschool, 2013, p. 1).
Another serious disadvantage of
homeschooling is socialization. Public education allows the child to meet,
interact, and socialize different children and individuals with different
values, characters, beliefs, and even culture on a daily basis. Scholars argue
that exposing children to various cultures and personalities will allow to them
develop their social skills. This is the same skill that they will use to
interact with other people and the wider population once they leave the school
grounds. Thus, public education becomes a training ground for the child to
build his or her social skills which will prove necessary for his or her
future. In addition to this, scholars point out that it is important for a
child to interact and form bonds with other children of their age as it will
help in his or her social development. On the contrary, home-based education
does not provide the child the opportunity to be exposed with other people.
Most of the time, the child will only interact with the tutor, parent, or
relatives. The lack of opportunity to interact with other children can affect
the student as they will not learn how to socially communicate or even behave
in a group setting (Homeschool, 2013, p. 1).
In summary, homeschooling posts a
number of disadvantages for both the child and the parent. This include the
cost of homeschooling, lack of facilities, the time and effort required on the
parent’s part; and at the same time it does not allow the child to interact and
socialize with other children.
