Argumentative Essay against the Use of Steroids

Argumentative Essay against the Use of Steroids

Anabolic steroids are synthetic substances that are alike testosterone, the male sex hormone (National Institute on Drug Abuse). It was originally created as a cure for hypogonadism, a sickness in which the testes does not produce enough testosterones (MuscleNet.com). In the 1930’s, it was discovered that steroids can also cause a physical and muscular growth, which led to bodybuilders and athletes alike to use them. However, the side effects of steroids are far greater than its advantages. Steroid use can cause infertility, weakening of the muscles, and heart failure.

Using steroids can alter the production of testosterones, which are essential for the full growth of a male (Association against Steroid Abuse). Testosterones are responsible for the development of male characteristics and the production of sperms. However, the natural production of the aforementioned hormone is controlled by another hormone called gonadotrophins, which are released by the pituitary gland in the brain. The intake of steroids can cause an imbalance in the production of gonadotophins, which can result to atrophy, or shrunken testicles. This results to infertility because whit the shrunken size of testicles, there is an alteration in the production of testosterones; therefore, there is a huge decrease on the production of sperm cells.

Though steroids increase bone and muscle strength, the rapid and abrupt changes in the muscles and bones can weaken it in the long run. The use of steroids has been proven to be associated to the weakening of the tendons (Association against Steroid Abuse). Also, research suggests that the steroids lead to an alteration in the growth and development of collagen fibrils, therefore decreasing the strength of tendons. With prolonged use, steroids can cause a terrible tendon rupture.

Lastly, the use of steroids can weaken the heart.  According to the Association against Steroid Abuse, an enlarged heart is related to the use of steroids while undergoing physical training. The use of steroids while working one’s body out causes a swelling and disintegration of the heart's tissues. The use of steroids can also narrow and harden the arteries, causing blood clog and clot.

However, steroids, like all drugs, have its benefits as well. But if it is not used by a person in the right way, their body might suffer from its effects. Before using steroids, it is best to consult a physician first to ensure your health and safety.
