How to Write a Descriptive Essay
Reading descriptive writings is a very rewarding experience. Among other types of essays, descriptive essays give readers a personal touch. Describing something is not a hard thing to do. The object is there. All you have to do is to look for the right words that best represent that object. Great descriptive essays tend to give the readers a clear and deeper experience because of the detailed descriptions of the writer.
The Subject
In every essay, looking for a very good subject is important. You must know who or what you want to describe and why. Tell a story about someone or something that means a lot to you–it will make it easier for you to tell the story in an interesting way. You might want focus on:
- a person
- your best friend
- your teacher
- an object
- your favourite toy
- your dream car
- a place
- your school
- the beach
- an experience
- your birthday
- your trip to Europe
You must have a reason why you are writing about a particular subject and get in touch with that reason. This will help you focus your description with what you want your readers to feel. Don’t just write about the physical traits but include how the subject might feel. Memory and emotion are significant in showing importance to the subject.
The Description
Your goal in writing a descriptive essay is to make the words alive for the readers. You should give them a rich experience of the subject. You should not only tell your words but you should SHOW the words. One of the best way to show is to involve all the five sense.
- Sight
- Smell
- Sound
- Touch
- Taste
Let your reader see the sunset, smell the flower, hear the drums, touch the silk and taste the cake.
Use concrete and images and ideas to describe the subject. Avoid abstract language – it will not help your reader understand what you are trying to say. Concrete language makes the story or image seem clearer and more real to the reader while an abstract language makes the story or image difficult to visualize. Consider this:
Abstract: My baby cousin looks cute.
Concrete: My 6-month old baby cousin is so adorable with dimples on his rosy, chubby cheeks.
Express your feelings and show your creativeness.
Be consistent when describing. Start from general to specific or small details.
The Finale
Always remember to draft your essay first. Double check the grammar. Ask someone to read it for you – you will hear how it sounds and you may also ask opinion from your first reader. Then, write your final work.
Descriptive essays are often subjective tasks. It is often creative, personal, or simply artistic and there is no writing guide that could help better than your own experience.
